Twitter was always that one social network you could trust to feed you with all your social needs without ads for mobile apps you never have or will have any interest in. All that is past tense now. Expect irritating adverts from now until forever of banners for those games that pop up often enough when you’re using Facebook or when you’re indulging in your daily dose of TV.
The ads will appear as a normal tweet with an image and link that redirects you to directly download the app. For those with the app already installed, the link will open up the app or perform the download of updates or additional content. The adverts will only be found on the Twitter of mobile devices using iOS or Android operating systems, however Windows and Blackberry will not be affected. Plans released show no intention to bring this feature onto any additional devices.
The ads have only been released globally this week however many of you may have seen them since April when beta tests began. Twitter aren’t the first social media site to release ads onto mobile devices. In fact this method is old news to Google with YouTube, and is a technique already released earlier this year by Facebook.
For app publishers, an analytics tool is provided to monitor how well promotions are doing, sending a little bit of money to Twitter each download that is achieved. Companies will be able to target their ads to users based on their interests, keywords, gender, geographic location, language and device used, however there is no way of escaping these ads.
Many loyal Twitter users are likely to feel betrayed by this conformity to the path of mobile advertising, however at least it is easy to download the app if it does take your interest.
